Tom Turco EOHS Scholarship

The Idaho Environmental Health Association has established the Tom Turco Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Scholarship through the Boise State University Foundation. IEHA has had a long-standing relationship with Boise State University's Community and Environmental Health (CEH) program. With that relationship at the forefront, IEHA has elected to create a scholarship dedicated to CEH program students. IEHA has also elected to name the scholarship in honor of Tom Turco. Mr. Turco dedicated his carecr to building ldaho's environmental and public health programs, laws, and statutes. In his retirement Mr. Turco has continued his dedication to environmental and public health through his efforts to educate, guide, and inspire students within Boise State University's CEH program. In provision of this scholarship IEHA strives to help CEH students successfully complete their degrees so they can continue to deliver and grow the work of environmental and public health professionals that came before them in the hopes that they will find and foster the sarne passion and dedication to the field as Mr. Turco.

Criteria

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a junior or senior enrolled in the Environmental and Occupational Healh and Safety program who has a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a GPA of 3.0 or above. Recipients must also be enrolled as a full-time student currently taking 12 undergraduate credits. Selection of the recipient is determined by the Boise State University Foundation based on the afformentioned criteria and after consideration of financial need according to the definition of the Boise State University Financial Aid and Scholanhips office. Selection will be made without regard to race, color, gender, religion, or national origin. The scholarship will be awarded annually at $500.

Current Sponsorship and Future Goals

The Idaho Environmental Health Association Executive Council has elected to establish this scholarship under Boise State University Foundation criteria for a current use scholarship. This means the scholarship is funded annually by IEHA and awarded by BSU at the specified value. It is the executive council's goal to fund the scholarship on an annual basis at a higher level than what is awarded on an annual basis to build the current use account. This is made possible by the annual education conference sponsorship provided by BSU's CEH program. Their sponsorship delivers significant facility rental savings, a portion of which IEHA returns to the CEH program in the form of the scholarship. The long-range goal of this partnership is to build the Tom Turco Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Scholarship into an endowed scholarship. To reach an endowment level IEHA needs to build the scholarship fund to a minimum of $25,000. Once that level is reached the scholarship will award under the same criteria at $1,000 annually into perpetuity. Once that level is reached the IEHA Executive Council will make the decision on whether to continue funding this scholarship or to create a new one at BSU or one of Idaho's other university systems.
